Get your Cheeseburger in Paradise

If you’re looking for a true “Old Florida” experience, Cabbage Key is one of those places that feels like it hasn’t changed in decades—in the best possible way.
Only accessible by boat, this small island just off Pine Island feels completely removed from the everyday world. No cars, no crowds, no rush. Just sandy paths, open air, and that laid-back, barefoot Florida vibe.
What Makes It Special
Cabbage Key is often tied to the legend of Jimmy Buffett’s “Cheeseburger in Paradise.” While that story isn’t fully confirmed, you can grab a cheeseburger and a cold drink at the island restaurant—so it’s easy to see where the inspiration might have come from.
One of the most famous spots is the “dollar bill bar,” where visitors have been leaving signed bills for years. It’s quirky, fun, and very much part of the charm.
What to Expect
This is not a resort. And that’s exactly the point.
Think:
Walking trails instead of golf carts
Fishing off the dock
Reading a book in the breeze
Live music and stories at the bar
It’s more about slowing down than filling up your schedule.
Day Trip vs. Overnight
Most people visit for lunch by boat, and it can get lively around midday when the docks fill up.
But if you stay overnight, you’ll experience the best parts—quiet mornings and peaceful evenings when the day crowd leaves.
Getting There
By private boat (most common)
By water taxi or charter
Often combined with a shelling stop at Cayo Costa
Tips from the Island
Go early—dock space is first come, first served
Bring bug spray, sunscreen, and water
Plan it as a relaxed day, not a packed itinerary
Pair it with another stop (like Cayo Costa) for a full day out
From Us at KOA
